Townsville-Mackay Medicare Local selects Tunstall Healthcare as their telehealth provider

Date Released: Monday 19th December 2011
Townsville-Mackay Medicare Local selects Tunstall Healthcare as their telehealth provider to undertake NBN diabetes trial

Tunstall provides leading edge technology for type 2 diabetes patients in Townsville.

Townsville-Mackay Medicare Local has chosen Tunstall Healthcare to provide telehealth and video conferencing solutions for a Townsville based telehealth trial. This trial Is supported by funding from the Australian Government under the Digital Regions Initiative National Partnership Agreement, and the Queensland Government.

This trial will see patients using a Tunstall myclinic@home telehealth unit, blood pressure monitor and glucometer to measure their vital signs in the comfort of their own home. The results of the client’s measurements are then sent through to a clinical nurse for review through the patient management system, icp triagemanager.
The myclinic@home tablet, designed and produced in Australia by Tunstall’s technical team, incorporates state-of-the-art video conferencing, which will enable teleconsultations between patients and their clinician. The program is designed to enhance glycaemic control for patients, which significantly reduces the risk of costly diabetes-related complications. This trial is expected to deliver a range of benefits for type 2 diabetes patients and their health providers and carers.

The benefits include:
  • improved diabetes management
  • increased quality of life
  • independence through self-management
  • better support for GPs and allied health professionals.

Tunstall’s Clinical and Technical Team will provide training and support to ensure this trial is a success and pave the way to ensure telehealth becomes a mainstream form of healthcare delivery for Australians living with chronic diseases.

General Manager of Tunstall Australasia, Lyn Davies said, “The outcomes of the Townsville-Mackay trial will provide validation for both the public and private sectors in Australia to support new models of care which integrate telehealth.  Prevention and self-management programs which enable independence and long term wellbeing can create a brighter future for us all. More evidence for Australia needs to be developed before existing funding models can be replaced, but the time for action is now.”.

Lyn congratulated Townsville-Mackay Medicare Local on turning their telehealth program from a concept into a reality. She said, “Clearly they are leading the way in recognising that the future is upon us and action needs to be taken to evaluate alternative models of care to help prepare us for the future. It’s going to take time and it’s going to take a shift in thinking – by many - before we will see large scale deployment of technology combined with these new models of care, but it will happen.  Programs such as this will show us the way.”

World's Largest Telehealth Trial Results

Date Released: Thursday 15th December 2011
Telehealth Strongly Validated by First Results from Whole System Demonstrator Program (UK) – 6,191 Patients

Results from the world’s largest telehealth trial shows 45% reduction in mortality rates, 20% cut in emergency admissions and 15% reduction in A&E visits.

The first results from the Whole System Demonstrator (WSD) programme have proven definitively the effectiveness of telehealth in improving services and outcomes for patients with long-term conditions, according to Tunstall.

The WSD programme involved 6,191 patients with one of three long-term conditions (diabetes, heart failure or COPD) and 238 GP practices across three sites in the United Kingdom - Cornwall, Kent and Newham.   The randomised results, drawn from a minimum 12 months’ data on 3,030 participants revealed that telehealth delivered:

·         45% reduction in mortality rates
·         15% reduction in A&E visits
·        20% reduction in emergency admissions
·         14% reduction in elective admissions
·         14% reduction in bed days
·         8% reduction in tariff costs

The UK Prime Minister, David Cameron, announced the roll-out of advanced telehealth and telecare solutions to the homes of three million people over the next five years, with the aim of improving lives and putting the UK at the forefront of global healthcare. The Government’s 3ML (3 Million Lives) campaign aims to provide national leadership, strategic direction and advice to National Health Service (NHS) and social care organisations; with support from industry who would be responsible for creating the market and working with local organisations to deliver the change.

Mr Cameron said, “Look at our approach to telehealth – getting new technology into patients’ homes so they can be monitored remotely. We’ve trialled it, it’s been a huge success and now we’re on a drive to roll this out nationwide. The aim – to improve three million lives over the next five years. This is going to make an extraordinary difference to people.”

Gil Baldwin, CEO, Tunstall Healthcare said, “This is a fantastic example of industry and government working alongside each other to improve the lives of individuals living with long term conditions, enhancing clinical outcomes, supporting patients and doctors and saving money for the tax payer.”

Tunstall’s telehealthcare solutions are being used extensively in the WSD programme, with thousands of systems deployed with WSD service users in Cornwall, Kent and Newham.

The company’s telehealth solutions enable patients to monitor their vital signs such as weight, blood pressure, pulse, blood glucose level, peak flow, temperature, and oxygen levels in their own homes easily, safely and securely. The results are accessed on a daily basis by a team of clinicians who triage the patient's health outcomes. This aids with proactive case management, ensures timely and appropriate support to patients as well as promoting self-awareness and better management of their own long-term condition.

“Patients tell us that telehealth helps them to manage their condition better; gives them greater independence and peace of mind, makes them feel empowered to help themselves with their condition; has contributed to earlier diagnosis and treatment of conditions; and some believe it is stopping them from going into hospital.   We do not see telehealth as replacing GP or other clinical services; this is about helping people to maintain their independence and to seek medical help at an earlier stage.” Dave Tyas, Service Improvement Manager – Telehealth and Long Term Conditions, Peninsula Community Health.

Joe Barr, 60, is a Cornwall-based patient using Tunstall’s telehealthcare solutions as part of the WSD trial. He has several long-term conditions including COPD, diabetes and kidney disease. He said: “Telehealth monitors my body – if there is anything wrong I know I am going to get a phone call to discuss the issue with me and provide advice. My body is my responsibility. I understand more about my readings and relate it to my condition. It’s like having a little nurse on your shoulder -- it’s brilliant!”

General Manager of Tunstall Australasia, Lyn Davies commented, “The outcomes of this research provide further validation for governments in Australia and New Zealand to support new models of care which integrate telehealth and telecare. The WSD is a success story of government and industry working hand in hand to secure a better future for people in the management of their health and wellbeing long term.”

While there are similarities between Australasia and the UK markets there are significant differences such as the distances between service providers and customers, the multicultural and indigenous heritages, complex health systems and funding structures which needs to be explored. Lyn explains further, “Clearly more evidence for Australia and New Zealand needs to be developed before existing funding models can be replaced, but the time for action is now. These results of programs of the size of the WSD trial cannot be ignored. The evidence is too compelling.”

Lyn acknowledges that it’s going to take time and take a shift in thinking – by many - before we will see large scale deployment of technology combined with these new models of care, but she is confident it will happen, “Prevention and self-management programs which enable independence and long term wellbeing, will create a brighter future for us all”.

Largest telehealth service goes live

Date Released: Tuesday 13th December 2011
After around 3 years of negotiation, planning and preparation, Tunstall’s largest telehealth contract – RTNI (Remote Telemonitoring Northern Ireland) – has gone live. The momentous occasion is being marked by a Ministerial launch at the home of Larne pensioner Micheal Howard who has Chronic Pulmonary Obstructive Disorder (COPD) and was one of the first patients to start benefiting from telehealth.

In March 2011, TF3 – a consortium of Tunstall Healthcare, Fold Telecare and S3 Group - was chosen to provide a remote telemonitoring service to the Northern Ireland Health and Social Care System – the largest contract Tunstall has ever been involved in, reaching over 3,500 patients a year.

The award of the 6 year contract was led by the European Centre for Connected Health (part of Northern Ireland’s Public Health Agency) who worked in partnership with, and on behalf of, the five Health and Social Care Trusts.

Matthew Marshall, TF3 Programme Director says “RTNI has been a huge learning experience, enabling us to integrate various key services and technologies demonstrating new models of care at very large scale. Whilst the whole process of service definition and procurement has itself been hardwork, it has lead to a very robust understanding of large scale service levels and provides an ideal model for expansion elsewhere.”

Over the next 6 years, we will provide a telemonitoring service to Northern Ireland (RTNI) which will support over 3,500 people a year, thereby helping to reduce the pressure on frontline services by supporting people to be cared for in the community - a key aspect of the Government’s ambition for health services in Northern Ireland.

Date Released: Tuesday 27th September 2011

American Medical Alert Corp (Nasdaq: AMAC), a leading provider of remote health monitoring and 24/7 communication services that enhances care, accelerates response times, improves operational effectiveness and delivers sustainable patient services, has announced today that it has entered into a definitive agreement to be acquired by Tunstall Healthcare Group Limited, a leading telehealth and telecare provider. Tunstall will acquire all of the outstanding common shares of AMAC for $8.55 per share in cash without interest, representing a premium of approximately 50% over AMAC's closing share price on September 22, 2011, plus one Contingent Payment Right (CPR) per share providing a contingent cash payment for the holder of such common share in the event of a sale of AMAC's interests in the Lifecomm joint venture or prior sale of Tunstall under certain conditions.  The transaction is expected to close at the end of the fourth quarter of 2011.

Based in New York, AMAC has two business divisions. The first is Health and Safety Monitoring Systems (HSMS) which includes a rich portfolio of remote patient monitoring devices and services including personal emergency response systems (PERS), mobile PERS, medication management and telehealth. The second division is Telephony Based Communication Services (TBCS), AMAC's contact center services group, which provides concierge level communication services to all types of healthcare entities, including physician groups, hospitals, homecare and the pharmaceutical industry.

AMAC's board of directors unanimously approved the transaction, which is subject to customary closing conditions, including approval of AMAC's shareholders, but is not subject to any financing conditions and has the full support of Tunstall's majority shareholder.  In conjunction with the acquisition, directors and officers of AMAC, holding approximately 26% of the outstanding common shares of AMAC, have agreed to vote in favor of the transaction.

"We believe the decision by the board to merge with Tunstall is good for shareholders, employees and our customers," said Jack Rhian, President and Chief Executive Officer of AMAC.  "Tunstall's longstanding culture of engineering excellence, technological innovation and commitment to providing seniors with the tools to live independently is perfectly aligned with AMAC's mission. By joining with Tunstall, AMAC will have unprecedented access to its world class engineering and product portfolio as well as its global operating resources.  This transaction will allow AMAC to rapidly accelerate the scope of our portfolio in both remote patient monitoring and call center solutions thereby benefiting our entire customer base."

Gil Baldwin, Chief Executive Officer of Tunstall commented "AMAC will make a great addition to the Tunstall Group. We share the same vision and complement each other in a number of areas. AMAC will support our ambitious growth plans in the United States. As one of the largest providers of PERS in the US with 75,000 subscribers nationwide and a strong reach within hospital systems, home healthcare, government agencies and senior living facilities, I believe there will be far reaching benefits for all of our customers, partners and employees of the Group."

A special meeting of AMAC's shareholders will be held after the preparation and filing of a proxy statement with the Securities and Exchange Commission and subsequent mailing to shareholders.  Upon completion of the acquisition, AMAC will become a private company wholly owned by an affiliate of Tunstall.

Jefferies served as financial adviser and Latham & Watkins LLP served as legal adviser to Tunstall.  Houlihan Lokey acted as exclusive financial adviser and Moses & Singer LLP acted as legal adviser to AMAC in this transaction.
